EMERGENCY services are on the scene of a serious incident after witnesses reported seeing a woman fall off a bridge.

Essex Police, paramadics and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance are currently on the scene at the Balkerne Hill, in Colchester.

Balkerne Hill is now open again.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We were called at 1.30pm today to reports that a woman, aged in her 80s, had fallen from railings close to a bridge above Balkerne Hill, Colchester.

"The woman has been taken to hospital.

One witness reported rushing to help after witnesses saw a woman fall from the bridge onto the road below.

She said: "Someone jumped off the bridge, pretty much at the slip road from St Mary's car park.

"There were witnesses and it must have happened just as I was driving up Balkerne Hill.

"She must have fallen in front of the car in front of me as they suddenly braked.
"I drove around the roundabout and came back up, stopping the car to go and help.

"There was a military medic on the scene, myself and a police officer.

"There wasn't a lot I could do except keep her in the recovery position and hold her head.

"She was clothed but had a hospital band on her wrist - I fear she may have been vulnerable."
