AN ambitious fundraising drive is being launched to raise money for a church sound system, and to support other charities.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul, in West Mersea, is in dire need of an updated sound and audio system- at a cost of about £30,000.

In order to raise funds for the sound system, a 30-hour music marathon is kicking off on Friday, May 11.

All 60 available 30-minute slots have been taken by musicians, from swing bands to jazz groups, pop singers and solo artists.

The grand finale will be a rousing performance of songs from the stage musical, Joseph.

Performers in each set have been asked to seek sponsorship, which will be split 50/50 between their chosen charity and the church.

The new system will also allow proceedings to be streamed live via the internet to relatives and friends on the other side of the world who are unable to attend.

Sue Brook, a supporter of the church, said: "At the moment there is a basic system with a few speakers, but if there is a large wedding or funeral and guests have to go into the church hall they do not feel as if they are part of the service.

"We want to instal speakers and screens in the church hall so the proceedings can be seen there.

"The church is a beautiful space for music and we want the community to realise the church is there to be used for any concert, lecture or exhibition."

The Friends of West Mersea Church have been fundraising for the past five years for the general upkeep of the building.

They are now focussing, along with other volunteers, on fundraising for the new soundsystem.

The music marathon will also contribute to this fund.

Ian Jewitt, musical director at the church, is overseeing the fundraising event.

Mr Jewitt added: "I started off as the church organist two years ago and my connection with the church has grown over the years.

"This musical marathon is a way of bringing the church and the community together, and doing good things for each other.

"I wanted to bring in a more diverse mix of music, which is really important to people in times of joy and loss."

There will be refreshments available at the event including a cooked breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and midnight munchies.

Admission throughout is free, although donations will be most welcome.

The event is due to start at 2pm.
