AN illegal traveller encampment which had set up on Colchester Park and Ride has been removed.
The 12 caravans arrived on Cuckoo Farm site yesterday morning.
After being contacted by Essex County Council yesterday afternoon, Essex Police issued the group with what is known as a Section 61 Notice, which states a time by which the site must be cleared.
The travellers were given until 10am this morning to leave.
The site was clear shortly before 9am today.
An Essex County Council spokesman said: "The site will be open as usual for today's Colchester United Vs Luton Town football match."
In response to fears voiced by Martin Goss, Colchester councillor for Mile End, the spokesman added: "It is wrong to suggest security at the site is inadequate.
"During opening hours, Colchester Park and Ride site is manned by security guards.
"It has a comprehensive CCTV system and the Park Mark safer parking award."
He added: "The Park and Ride site is also locked and secured at night.
"But if people are really determined to gain entry, sometimes even these comprehensive measures may not be enough."
