A MOTORIST who targeted a cyclist and rammed him off his bike has been jailed.

The victim was riding a pedal cycle with a friend on North Station Road, when a Ford Mondeo being driven by Ashley Wallace Merrett braked sharply closeby.

The cyclist then made an obscene gesture at Wallace Merrett who then swerved into him and knocked him off his bike.

Fortunately, the cyclist only suffered minor injuries.

His friend tried to flag down Wallace Merrett, who then swerved the car back at him but he was able to avoid any contact.

Police were able to track down the car on the same day of the incident in May 2016.

Wallace Merrett, of Mumford Close, West Bergholt, admitted actual bodily harm, dangerous driving and common assault at a previous hearing at Ipswich Crown Court.

Jailed - Ashley Wallace-Merrett

During a sentencing hearing today, Judge Rupert Overbury said he would be failing in his public duty if he did not hand out an immediate custodial sentence and jailed him for 16 months.

The 30-year-old will also be banned from driving for two years and eight months.

Barry Gilbert, mitigating said Wallace Merrett had suffered a momentarily loss of temper and was extremely remorseful.
