A CAMPAIGN group opposed to a new nuclear power station at Bradwell say the Hinkley Point C development shows why Maldon can’t afford to house a new plant.

The Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group (BANNG) say large scale devastation on the Dengie Peninsular is inevitable, and point to the Hinkley development site in Somerset as evidence, citing drone footage taken flying over Hinkley.

Varrie Blowers, secretary of BANNG, said: “We have been saying for the past ten years that new nuclear development at Bradwell would devastate the environment and amenity of the Blackwater estuary area. But when you see the reality, it really hits home.”

BANNG believes that the low-lying Bradwell site is unsuitable for a new nuclear power station.

They say it is vulnerable to flooding at the moment, and that that vulnerability will increase with the sea-level rise that is expected as a result of climate change in the future.

Mrs Blowers added: “I urge everyone in the communities around the Blackwater estuary, all Essex county and local councillors and MPs to watch this film and to understand the full extent of what is proposed for Bradwell.

“If evidence were needed for the terrible effects on the environment of building new nuclear power stations, this film footage showing not a simulation but the actual devastation provides it.”
