BLUEPRINTS for a state-of-the art school expansion are set to go on show for the first time.

Essex County Council’s plans for Monkwick Junior School are set to go on display tomorrow.

The project would see a new two-storey teaching block built on the existing site in School Road, Colchester, providing two new classrooms, a studio, food technology room and special educational needs room.

An existing play area would also be extended, while additional car parking is also planned.

The scheme would create an extra 60 places in a bid to meet the growing demand for primary school places in the town.

Under the proposals, the school would be able to take its first intake of additional pupils in September this year, It is hoped the full expansion would be completed by September 2018.

Work is set to begin in November.

An Essex County Council spokesman said: “We continue to offer the overwhelming majority of children a place at one of their parents’ preferred schools and our strong track record of investment in creating new school places is vital in maintaining that trend.

“We are planning to create about 13,000 more school places by September 2019 to meet demand and ensure pupils in Essex continue to receive the best possible education.

“Projects like this one are crucial in enabling us to achieve those goals and I would encourage parents and residents to have their say on the plans.”

The plans will be on show at the school between 2.30pm and 7pm on Thursday.

Boards showing the proposed floor plans and design will be on show and comment forms will be available for public feedback.

Council officers, along with the contractor and architect, will also be on hand to discuss the proposals.

The plans can also be viewed at essexinsight.org.uk from Thursday.
