Douglas Carswell is facing calls to quit UKIP with his own party agent calling for him to be deselected.

However, the Clacton MP said he is not leaving and remains “100 per cent UKIP.”

He dismissed media talk about his future as “tea room tittle tattle” and said disgruntled councillors would be better off helping him save Clacton’s minor injuries unit.

The uproar follows claims the MP stopped Nigel Farage from getting a knighthood and whether he has been talking to Conservatives about returning.

Clacton UKIP branch chairman Tony Finnegan-Butler said the branch is “just shocked” by the latest controversies and said it will have “an interesting AGM on the 14th.”

He told the Gazette: “I don’t know what to say. Head Office haven’t given us any guidelines. We are just shocked. He told us he wouldn’t rejoin the Tories. I am saddened. I have an AGM in 12 days time. God knows what I will tell the members.”

“We can’t get rid of an MP unless he resigns. There is no mechanism. It’s all in Douglas’s court. We can only try and remove him at the election. We can’t deselect him.”

However, party agent Richard Everett said: “He has to go. It’s going to be difficult to remove him. The branch do have the capability to deselect him but are not willing. Personally, I do think he should be de-selected.

The Rush Green councillor added: “He doesn’t show any team spirit. It’s just him acting as an individual for his own self-interest.”

Hamford council Anne Davis said it was “time to let Douglas go.”

“The vast majority of UKIP councillors in Clacton feel the damaging, divisive influence of Douglas in Clacton and in the party has gone on for far too long.”

“He’s shown no loyalty to any of the leaders he has served. He’s a many of immense talents and gifts but he hasn’t used them for Ukip but against it.”

Independent councillor Joy Broderick, a member of UKIP nationally, but not the Clacton branch, said she had known Douglas Carswell since 2002 and he was the reason she left the Conservatives.

“He came over to UKIP for one reason, to get himself elected. He knew he would lose his seat as a Conservative. I feel sorry for the UKIP group on Tendring Council. The way he’s treated his own councillors is disgraceful.”

Mr Carswell yesterday denied talking to the Tories and said he remained “100 per cent UKIP.”

“Tea room tittle tattle has found its way onto the front page of 1-2 papers. I’m staying put. After the events of the past two years, I’m made of sterner stuff. I’m not the sort of person who is to be kicked out of the party over 1-2 disgruntled elements.”

“Apart from anything, due to the glories of the constitution, only the parliamentary party can withdraw the whip from an MP, which is me. I vote to stay on.”

“I hear 1-2 councillors are a little huffy. They may be better off trying to help me, Coun Andy Wood and Coun Chris Griffin save the minor injuries unit.”

Mr Carswell also told the Gazette he was “relaxed” about major UKIP party financier Arron Banks saying he would stand against him.

Mr Banks this week branded the MP “a terrible individual that’s done his best to destroy Ukip.”

The businessman also said: “We will have a high street shop in Clacton, professional agent appointed soon and I will be rolling my sleeves up.”

He also tweeted “Clacton 2020.”

Should Ukip’s only MP return to his former party, he would face another battle for selection.

Clacton’s 2015 Conservative party candidate Giles Watling said he has been asked to stand again but has not been formally adopted yet.

He would “oppose” a bid from Mr Carswell standing for the Tories.

Coun Watling added: “You can’t wander off and expect to return.”
