TWO pygmy hippos have welcomed their new baby at Colchester Zoo.

Venus and Freddie the hippos became parents for the third time on January 22 when Venus gave birth to a tiny female calf.

The new arrival, who has not yet been named, was conceived naturally.

Her birth is fantastic news for both the zoo and their species, as pygmy hippos are currently listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.

According to Colchester Zoo, pygmy hippopotamus usually live alone apart from when they have offspring, who usually stay with their mother for the first few years of their lives.

The new baby will remain with Venus as she learns the life skills of a hippo - and as the zoo's video shows, she has already begun exploring the enclosure and swimming in the pool.

A spokesman for the zoo said: "We look forward to joining Venus on her journey with her calf and we will share her key moments of development with you on our website and social media pages."

The zoo would love your help naming the new calf. Make your suggestions here.
