Police officers have set out a battle plan to get tough on burglars.

The pledge came as figures show Essex Police is failing to reach local Government targets for solving break-ins.

Research suggests residents in the county are among those most likely to worry about having their homes broken into, out of those in the eight most similar force areas.

Currently the force is not meeting its 24 per cent detection rate target for the crime, solving just 16.3 per cent of all reported incidents.

It is also failing to reduce incidents, recording nine per cent more dwelling burglaries than it wanted to, from April 2006 to March this year.

Essex Assistant Chief Constable Carmel Napier said improvements needed to be made to get more burglaries detected.

She said: "We are aware of the impact this crime has on people, and that it is the subject of concern for a lot of communities. We are looking to improve on this, and have done, but we are continually looking at what more can be done."
