Colchester's Roman history has proved the inspiration for many entries to our name a road competition.

The Gazette teamed up with Corporate Associates to find a name for the Stanway western relief road, which is due to open in the next few weeks.

More than 130 entries were received and our judging panel will now be drawing up a shortlist.

The finalists' road names will be printed in the Gazette, where you will be able to vote for your favourite.

Danny Watts, of Corporate Associates, which is building the road, and Irene Kettle, editor of the Gazette, will be meeting later this week to select the names to go to the public vote.

Among entries received are Chariot Way, Gladiatorial Way and Roman Keep, while others focus on the location such as Stane Way or Westside Way.

The winner will be given a meal out and invited to help open the road.

The final name will need to be formally approved by the relevant authorities, and, in the event of that name being rejected, an alternative prize will be offered.
