THE managing director or a leading builder's merchants says Colchester's housing industry could grind to a halt if Britain votes to leave the EU.

Simon Blaxill, of Kent Blaxill, based on Layer Road, met Essex MEP Richard Howitt to discuss how an exit would impact on the industry.

Mr Howitt also met members of staff and took questions during his visit to Colchester.

Mr Blaxill said he had already seen signs of the market slowing down as doubt over whether the UK will remain as part of the EU continues.

He said: Even the prospect of this uncertainty, has already caused a slowdown in the construction industry and the supply of materials in 2016.

“Not many building supply companies would relish this prospect and the negative impact can escalate quickly with a direct impact on UK jobs.

“Kent Blaxill employs a number of European colleagues who have always worked hard and are valued members of the team.

“I enjoy the company of a number of foreign nationals who now live and work in the UK.”

Mr Howitt said: “This is another example of a thriving Colchester business expressing what they believe is best for the local economy.

“As a member of the European Parliament for Colchester I have fought to make sure the right to housing is recognised as human right.

“And that is why I am so glad to come to Kent Blaxill and meet those who are responsible for supplying the building materials to get the homes built that we need in Colchester.

“Housing is a basic need and a human right and unless we Remain in the European Union we are hearing today from local house builders that this housing market, the local economy and the living situation of local people will be put at risk.”
