CHRISTMAS came early for children staying at Colchester Hospital as football stars brought them gifts.

Two football international joined four players from Ipswich Town FC on their annual Christmas visit.

Midfielders Jonathan Douglas and Tommy Oar, who have won caps for Ireland and Australia, were joined by defender Piotr Malarczyk and striker Freddie Sears.

Ex Ipswich player Simon Milton, who made 332 appearances for the club where he still works, also went along to the Children’s Unit.

The footballers handed out presents to children, chatted with them and signed autographs.

Jonathan Douglas, a midfielder for Ipswich, was visiting the children for the first time.

He said: “It’s really good to see all the children who are ill with smiles on their faces.

“It’s difficult being here over Christmas for not just the children but for their families as well, and it is a pleasure to give something back.”

Every time the players visit, the staff at the ward can see a change in the children.

Sacha Skinner, a hospital play specialist, said: “The children love being able to smile and have a bit of fun whilst they are poorly.

“There is a visual change in everyone and it is just a warm and happy time.”

For some children, it has been one of the greatest gifts to be able to see new faces.

Donna Hayhoe took her granddaughter Keilah, 3, to visit the players.

She said: “Keilah was really excited to come round and see the footballers, it really perked her up as it is horrible to be in here at Christmas time.”

The players visited the ward yesterday afternoon *Thursday*.

They gave the children toys and art sets to keep them entertained, as well as Ipswich Town gifts.
