JAM maker Wilkin & Sons has opened its newest Tiptree tea room.
The Batte-Lay has opened in the Minories Art Gallery in Colchester High Street – its first in the town.
The new tea room has been named after Victor Batte-Lay, an art collector whose widow bought The Minories in 1956.
Ian Thurgood, joint managing director of Wilkin and Sons, said: “We are delighted to have a Tiptree tea room in Colchester.
“We plan to ensure the unique nature and special character of The Minories makes the Batte-Lay the ideal venue and meeting point, both for the people of the town and visitors.”
The gallery is run by Colchester Institute’s Colchester School of Art, showcasing work to the public with studio space for the MA students.
The college used to run the gallery’s café, but it closed and Wilkin & Sons took over.
It already has tearooms across Essex, including Braintree, Dedham, Heybridge and Tiptree.
