THOUSANDS of people turned out today to pay their respects to to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The traditional Remembrance Day service took place at Colchester war memorial.

Large crowds gathered in the High Street to take part in the moving service which was attended by civic dignitaries and Armed Forces veterans.

After the service almost 100 soldiers from Colchester-based 3 Para and 16 Medical Regiment paraded through the town with veterans and youth organisations.

They were joined by reservists from 36 (Essex Yeomanry) Signal Squadron, 71 Yeomanry Signal Regiment and 161 Medical Squadron, 254 Medical Regiment as they marched to the town hall for a reception.

A private ceremony was held earlier at the Memorial Garden at the town’s Merville Barracks for families of 16 Air Assault Brigade soldiers killed on operations to lay wreaths and pay tribute to their relatives.

Wreathes were also laid at the First and Second World War memorials in Colchester Cemetery.
