THREE more restaurants have been lined up for a major development in Stanway.

A public consultation for the Stane Park Leisure Quarter, at Tollgate, revealed more names will be joining Nando’s, Bella Italia and pub chain McMullen.

However, developer Churchmanor Estates refused to reveal who, and people will have to wait until the end of the month to learn more.

Yesterday, residents had the chance to see detailed plans at the consultation, held at the Holiday Inn, in Eight Ash Green.

Maureen and Brian Squirrell, of Holly Road, Stanway, said they were concerned about congestion when the whole area, including new homes, is developed.

Mr Squirrell, 75, said: “They are poor roads and they are not going to be able to cope.”

Mrs Squirrell, 73, said: “It seems a lot of restaurants, but if you’re going to have all those houses there, they probably will get used. Many people eat out now.”

Kier Stannard, 41, from Stanway, said he was looking forward to using the new restaurants. He said: “There are going to be more people and more money in the area.

“It will be nice to have a few more choices. I will use the restaurants.”

Managing director of Churchmanor Estates, Stephen Clark, said: “There has been incredibly positive feedback.

“People love the design.

We’ve had a lot of good feedback about the internal walkway, landscaping and courtyards.”

The site is next to Wyvern Farm, where 350 homes are due to be built.

People have raised concerns about additional traffic the new developments will bring.

The Stane Park scheme includes a new road off the Sainsbury’s roundabout, with two bus stops.

The car park will be split into two areas – one for the pub and the other for the other five restaurants.

Only the pub’s car park will be able to exit on to London Road, in a bid to cut congestion.

All other cars will have to exit on to the new road.

Mr Clark said the busy traffic periods for his development and the new homes next door would would not be as bad as feared.

He said: “You don’t go to a restaurant at 9am or 5pm. It is staggered.”

All the restaurants will be connected by a walkway, and there will be outdoor areas and courtyards for visitors to enjoy.

Mr Clark said: “We’re trying to create a sense of community in the Stanway area.

“We’re just building on what is already here.”

The development will create 250 jobs, 130 of which are expected to be full-time.

Colchester Council will have the final say on the plans.
