A COMMUNITY pub has re-opened after a £46,000 refurbishment.
The Artilleryman pub, in Artillery Street, Colchester was closed for two weeks while work to convert the bar from a “spit and sawdust pub” to a more modern venue.
Landlord Darren Farrell, said his aim was to update the decor, but also incorporate the pub’s historic military connections with the artillery.
Mr Farrell said: “We wanted to bring the pub into the 21st century, but still capture the Tilly’s original aura.
“It’s important people still come in and say ‘yeah, this is the Tilly’.
“But we wanted to bring back the link to the military, which we think is quite important.”
Mr Farrell, 50, who runs the pub with partner Lianne Hunter, 46, has also included a history of Colchester montage.
The couple took over the pub in March last year and are keen to run a number of charity events in the coming year.
