COLCHESTER could see up to 6,000 homes built on its eastern border in the next two decades.
Tendring Council has earmarked land to the east of Greenstead between the A120 and St Andrew’s Avenue, for 3,000 homes to built.
The land will also take in Plains Farm, at the top of Colchester’s Ipswich Road, and Fox Street, near Ardleigh.
It has also emerged Colchester Council is reviewing its own local plan, which could result in a similar number of homes being built on nearby parcels of land, which lie within the Colchester borough.
As part of the review, private landowners are asked to come forward to offer their land to be included for potential development.
Paul Smith, borough councillor for St John’s, which borders the land included in Tendring’s plan, said it “would make sense” for Colchester to consider developing the remaining land, in line with Tendring’s plan.
He said: “We are reviewing our local plan.
“At the moment, the plan does not include the strips of land in Colchester, but we understand it would make sense to build on the land within our boundary given the access, for one thing, will be taken care of.”
