A STREET was cordoned off after builders doing paving work discovered a live Second World War grenade.
Workers at Kendall Terrace, of Winnock Road, Colchester, raised the alarm just after 1.30pm yesterday after finding a suspected grenade.
A team from Colchester Troop 621 Squadron, 11 EOD Regiment Royal Logistic Corps arrived and discovered it was a live Second World War-vintage No.3 Rifle Grenade.
It was carefully recovered and taken to Fingringhoe Ranges, where it was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
An Army spokesman said: "The builders did exactly the right thing in calling the police as soon as they found the grenade and not moving it.
"We would encourage people to call 999 if they do have concerns about any suspect items they find. It is better to be safe than sorry."
