TRIBUTES have been paid to a roofer who died in motorbike crash, aged 27.

Daniel Knight, from Great Totham, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle when it crashed with a BMW car in Cross Road, Maldon, on Sunday at 3pm.

He was flown to the Royal London Hospital but died from his injuries later the same day.

About 40 people attended a gathering in Daniel’s memory at the Prince of Wales pub in Great Totham.

His friends are making donations towards his funeral and have at events, including at Heybridge Swifts Football Club this Saturday at 7pm.

Daniel’s friend Ray Rutter set up a Facebook tribute page, which had more than 300 members within 24 hours.

Ray said: “I have already been round to see his mother and said we are going to cover the cost of his funeral. We want to give him a good farewell.”

A memorial tree and bench are also being planned.

Ray said it was amazing how many people had messaged him saying they knew Daniel, who was known as Little Dan because of his height.

He said: “He was always bubbly, always laughing.”

The Bengal Tiger in The Square, Heybridge, is also supporting Daniel’s family.

Vijay Hamid said: “This Sunday we are doing a meal to raise money.

“The buffet will be free, but we will be asking for donations for meal which will go towards his funeral.”

  •  Essex Police have appealed for anyone who saw the crash or either vehicle in or near Cross Road to call the serious collision investigation unit on 101, or e-mail collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk The car driver, a man in his early twenties, from the Maldon area, was uninjured.

The road remained shut until 8pm for forensic collision work and recovery of the vehicles involved.
