A TELEVISION documentary featuring nightlife in Colchester and Clacton through the eyes of bouncers will hit our screens tonight – and it won’t be pretty.

Bouncers, a three-part series, was filmed over the summer in Colchester’s Queen Street and Marine Parade East in Clacton.

It follows door staff at Silk Road, TPs Sports Bar, the Liquor Lounge and a kebab shop.

The Channel 4 series is described as: “Presenting an explosive portrait of Britain by night, seen through the eyes of the door staff who have to stay sober and clean up the mess of a binge-drinking nation.”

It comes weeks after Colchester Council discussed tackling drunken antisocial behaviour in the town centre.

Tim Young, councillor for community safety in Colchester, is worried about the new show.

He said: “We are on tenterhooks and keeping our fingers crossed.

“Party Paramedics did not show Colchester in a positive light and I don’t hold out much hope of this being any different.”

Channel 4 show Party Paramedics, which was screened last year, was criticised for sensationalising violence and exaggerating Colchester’s alcohol problems. Essex Police declined to comment until Bouncers is shown. It is on for the next three Thursdays at 10pm.

DESCRIPTIONS from Bouncers about Colchester and Clacton include:

Colchester in Essex is a small town that comes to life at night. It’s a garrison town and has a university and everybody, it seems, loves a drink.
• Queen Street is the hub of the town’s late night drinking – if it’s going to kick off, this is where it will happen.
Silk Road bouncers remove the wrong sort through the back door, who usually end up fighting in the alley.
• Not every kebab shop has a bouncer, but at this one it’s necessary. When everyone gets kicked out onto the streets at 3am, things can turn nasty – and they usually do.
Clacton on Sea has seen better days and much of its holiday industry has shut down, but one club still flies the flag for hardcore partying.
• “The best nights are those where you go home with your money in your pocket and no blood on your shirt,” said a Liquor Lounge bouncer
• “Life on the door in Clacton is tough. With thirty knife crimes last month. It’s a dangerous town to work in.”
• Most people know that I will fight anyone who gets in my space,” says a Silk Road bouncer.
The Liquor Lounge. The bouncers at the club have to stay on their toes as they face everything from people stripping naked to mass brawls with bottles and glasses flying.
• As spring turns to summer Clacton braces itself for the hordes of holidaymakers descending from London and causing havoc. “They’re not holiday makers, they’re trouble makers” says one local of the new arrivals.
