COLCHESTER’S new Christmas lights display will be unveiled this month.

The town centre’s festive lights will be switched on by mayor Colin Sykes on Saturday, November 30 at 5.30pm.

As well as the decorations, there will also be a festive performance from the Military Wives Choir.

Paul Smith, borough councillor responsible for business, said: “The Christmas lights switch on is one of the most popular events of the year and is even more exciting this year as we celebrate a new theme to the town's lights.

“When the Christmas lights are switched on, the town centre looks wonderfully festive [and] I hope as many people as possible come along and take part in what promises to be a magical and unforgettable event.”

Michelle Reynolds, chair of Colchester Christmas Group, which is co-ordinating festive events this year, added: “This partnership approach to Christmas in Colchester really is successful.

“We want local people to embrace the town this year, shop locally and support the festive activities.”

Shoppers will be able to park for free after 3pm every Wednesday from December 4, when late night shopping begins.

Parking on Sundays will also be capped at 50p.
