A TEENAGER has appeared in court charged with causing the death of his friend in a crash.
Josh Irvine, 18, of Canterbury Road, Colchester, died when the Citroen Saxo in which he was a passenger crashed with a road sweeper in Bromley Road, Colchester, on November 8 last year.
Michael Lock, 19, of Cowdray Avenue, Colchester, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared before Colchester magistrates on Tuesday.
Magistrates were unable to hear the case because of its severity.
Lock did not enter a plea and was bailed to Chelmsford Crown Court on January 27.
Families and friends of Josh and Lock filled the court for Lock’s first appearance. After the hearing, friends and family were advised not to discuss the case on social networking sites.
Former St Helena School pupil Josh was studying engineering at Colchester Institute.
His friends released Chinese lanterns in his memory and held fundraising events to pay towards his funeral.
