Thousands of people watched on as the sky above Castle Park was lit up by Colchester’s annual firework display.

About 8,000 people attended King Coel’s Kittens 43rd display, which raised cash for people with special needs and Colchester Zoo’s charity Action for the Wild.

A procession, which included the guy, made its way through the park before reaching bonfire.

Jackie Bowis, one of the organisers, said: “I think the applause at the end showed the crowd approved and enjoyed it.

“People came into the park quite a lot earlier this year. The weather was kind to us.

“It was a lovely scene on the bank with all the lights. There was a wonderful atmosphere and there was a buzz which meant people enjoyed it.”

X Factor winner Matt Cardle performed his two songs When You Were My Girl and Loving You during the evening.

He said: “It has been great. The fireworks were amazing.

“To see everyone out there was great. It was a great crowd.

“It is my home crowd so it was really good to be there.”

Matt has just released his new album Porcelain and will be going on tour next year.

He added: “It is going great. We charted just outside the Top Ten.

“I’m having a little break after this album but it won’t be for long.

“I just want to thank everybody for the support.”

ITV presenter Jeff Brazier, who is starring in pantomime in Clacton at Christmas, was also on hand to help countdown to the fireworks.
