HALLOWEEN monsters were on their best behaviour across Colchester with hundreds taking to the streets to have fun.

Essex Police ran Operation Pumpkin with extra officers drafted in last night to combat any anti-social behaviour and make sure the streets were safe for young trick and treaters.

And the operation was a great success with only a few incidents of trouble, mostly involving egg throwing yobs who attacked homes, cars and a bus in Stanway.

About 28 officers and PCSOs out on patrol, which is slightly more than usual, witnessed a party atmosphere among the ghosts and ghouls, Frankensteins and skeletons.

Wivenhoe in particular was packed with children having fun and buckets being filled with treats.

Chief Insp Richard Phillibrown, district commander for Colchester, said: “It was a really great evening with lots of people having fun and only a couple of events of anti-social behaviour.

“On the whole it has been much better than last year.

“Trick and treating has become much more common in recent times and we want to help people to have fun and stay safe.”
