A CAMPAIGNING mum who runs an anti-knife charity in memory of her son has been nominated for Tesco’s Mum of the Year award.

Caroline Shearer set up Only Cowards Carry after son Jay Whiston, 17, was stabbed to death outside a house party in Marlowe Way, Colchester in September last year.

Caroline, 48, of Aster Close, Clacton, wants to educate children about the dangers of carrying knives.

She was nominated by Elliott McMillan, a volunteer at the charity.

Caroline is one of 33 finalists whittled down from 6,000 nominees.

Elliott said: “Caroline is an inspiration to a lot of people because she is so strong, and has helped Jay’s friends to stay strong.

“By setting up Only Cowards Carry she has allowed the community to work together to make where we live a safer place to bring up future generations.”

Caroline said: "This nomination is not just for me - it is for all parents that are grieving for their children that have been killed by weapons.

“I am very proud of all the support everyone has given. I am nothing special I am just a mum.”

Only Cowards Carry runs a charity shop in Jackson Road, Clacton.

Caroline’s aim is campaigning to make weapons awareness part of the national curriculum and for tougher action against knife and weapon crime.

The charity has held dozens of anti-knife assemblies and plays in schools in Colchester and Tendring, and is working with a former soldier to give weapons advice lessons.

The shortlisted mums will be considered by a panel of judges, which includes DJ Sara Cox, TV personality Gaby Logan and former Olympic heptathlete Denise Lewis.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony London’s Savoy in March next year.
