CONTROVERSIAL parking charges supposed to start in Dedham this summer have been put on ice until next year.


A packed residents’ meeting was held in the beauty spot to discuss Colchester Council’s proposals.


It has suggested charging motorists to use the Mill Lane and Duck Pond car parks.


The proposal, which could see them charged £4 a day, has been met with bitter opposition from residents and traders concerned over its impact on the village.


About 80 people attended the  meeting hosted by Dedham Parish Council, along with Martin Hunt, Colchester Council’s portfolio holder for street services, and council officers.


Speaking afterwards, Mr Hunt said: “I have delayed things until the spring in order to try and reach some agreement that has the consensus, because that is the democratic thing to do and is the way I do things.”


Mr Hunt insisted charges would definitely be introduced - but that he had not finalised what they would be.
 

Initial proposals also included to charge motorists £2 to park for one to two hours and £50 a year for traders.
 

Between now and next spring Dedham Parish Council will conduct research with residents and hold more discussions with Colchester Council.
 

The Essex Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) will also talk to traders.
 

Iain Wicks, Essex FSB chairman, said: “The community has really come together and residents and businesses have spoken with one voice and given a clear message to Martin Hunt and Colchester Council that the proposals as they are, are not acceptable.”
