A DOUBLE garage and car have been destroyed by fire during an unexplained blaze.

Five fire crews from Frinton, Clacton and Weeley were called to the fire which threatened to get out of control and spread to nearby homes.

Firefighters got the call to go to Winchester Road, Frinton, at 2.42pm today.

When they arrived they found the garage and car engulfed by flames which were about to set the roof of the house alight.

A spokesman for the Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews arriving at the scene reported that the garage, containing one car, was 100 per cent alight and that the fire was threatening to spill into the roof of the property.

"At 3.05pm they were using two hose reels and a covering jet in an attempt to prevent the flames spreading.

"Initially two appliances were sent to the scene but on arrival the incident commander immediately requested the attendance of another two appliances."

The fire was out by 3.30pm and crews were able to save the home.
Nobody was hurt and there was nobody inside the house at the time.

It is not yet known how the fire started.
