TWO powerful plays are set to be performed at the Headgate Theatre in Colchester.

First up will be Making Waves and their production of the award-winning play Two, by Jim Cartwright.

Set in a northern pub, it follows one evening’s events as seen through the eyes of the pub-goers and the beleaguered landlord and landlady. The play features 14 diverse characters, perfomed by just two actors.

Director Kerry King says: “The appeal of Two is how it uses the different characters to highlight the various facets of love. How we all tend to put on a public face while struggling with private emotion.

“It’s a funny, moving and tender play with notes of high drama. We also have the added bonus of musical entertainment from guitarist Oliver Daldry and local composer, Will Hooper.”

The following week, it is the turn of Headgate Productions, peforming A Pin to See the Peepshow.

It’s an adaptation of the best-selling novel, by F Tennyson Jesse, based on the notorious Thompson and Bywaters murder case of 1922.

Director Andrew Hodgson, says: “Edith Thompson was hung for her part in the murder of her husband by her young lover, Frederick Bywaters, but the case caused a furore as it was widely felt she was convicted for her morals, rather than her participation in the killing.”

Andrew’s own adaptation features Laura Hill as Edith, Will Parrick as her husband and Phil Young as Frederick.

Two will appear at the theatre, in Chapel Street North, Colchester, from February 24 to 26. Tickets cost £9 or £8 concessions.

A Pin to See the Peepshow will be hosted by the theatre, from March 2 to 4. Tickets cost £5.
