THE Rising is a rather appropriate name for the band songwriter Cameron Scorer has built-up around him.

About to finish his final year at Colchester Sixth Form College, the Colne Engaine musician is currently building quite a reputation for his pop tunes.

And now it might go national with a finalist slot in the Rock the House music competition and a chance to play the House of Commons.

It’s a competition in which Colchester already has a past winner in Angry Vs the Bear and Cameron is excited at the prospect of emulating their success.

He says: “It’s very exciting. It was one of those things that literally came out of the blue.

“I can only imagine what playing the House of Commons will be like but it will be amazing if we get the chance to do it. At the moment I’m just excited about playing in the final.”

Rock the House was set up in 2011 by Mike Weatherley MP to raise awareness for intellectual property rights and the importance of live music.

The Rising entered the competition online in March and have been put forward by local MP, Sir Bob Russell in the Under 19 band category.

Cameron along with James Sheldrake, Louis Searle, and Conor Knight, will compete at the live final on May 27 at the Bedford in Balham, London.

The event will be hosted by Tony Moore who is the owner of the Bedford and a musician in his own right.

Tony was one of the founder members of Iron Maiden and has played a pivotal role in the launch of the careers of Ed Sheeran, Damien Rice, and Paolo Nutini.

Cameron adds: “It’s an honour to reach the final 12 of a national competition and it shows how far we have come on in the short time that we have been together.

“To have the recognition and praise that we have had has just blown us away.”

After being formed in January, Cameron and his band have already played gigs at the Colchester Arts Centre and are looking to record in the summer.

The band have a distinctive pop sound, based around piano and acoustic guitar and Cameron’s talent for a catchy melody.

This weekend the group, minus Conor but with the addition of keyboard player Poppy Etherden, will be playing the Hole in the Wall pub in Colchester.

“I’ve been playing the piano since I was seven,” he says, “but it didn’t really get started until last year when it was just me on the piano and Louis on the drums.

“I’ve always liked pop right from an early age. I remember at the age of 11 saying to my piano teacher I was a bit bored of the classical stuff and can’t we do a pop song.

“The idea of having Poppy on board is so that I can concentrate on delivering the vocals while she plays the piano parts.”

The Rising play the Hole in the Wall in Colchester on Saturday with Stu E Skinner also on the bill. Doors open at 8pm and entry is free.
