TWO new open mic nights have started up in Southend, and not just for music.

“If anyone wants to tell jokes, do a dance, that’s OK,” was the general message from both individual organisers of the separate nights.

The nights are run by local band members Nathan Abbott, of the 54 Plates, and Matt Linnen, of Vox Empire.

Nathan’s night is held at the at the Old Hat, in Alexandra Street, on Wednesday nights from 7.30pm until midnight, and Matt’s is at the East Coast Social bar, in the Broadway, every Monday, from 8pm until 11pm.

Nathan said: “Everyone is welcome. Once a month we have a special guest. In the past, we have had Youth Club and For We Are Many.

“People just need to turn up, even if they want to do a bit of Spanish dancing. We also have a resident drummer, Jamie from the 54 Plates, who is there to fill in and jam along.

“This week my brother Nolan and I were trying out a few new songs we have written for the 54 Plates.”

Matt said of his new night: “I love the fact this place is pushing live music. There’s so much talent in Southend and it’s good to get another outlet.

“It will be running weekly, with deals on food and drink. Everyone is welcome to bring their instruments and play or just to kick back and check out some music and all kinds of performances are welcome.

“It’s only just started, but it’s already getting bigger and better every week.”

Both events have free admission.

There was more good news for the 54 Plates this week, as they are about to support Status Quo at the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power.

The event, in Cheshire, is billed as the “UK’s most dynamic Motorsport event” and lasts for three days.

The band has recently acquired a new bass player, Andy Carr.
