WITH all of his achievements to date, DJ Jim “Heist” Muir could base himself anywhere in the world.

He’s remixed tracks for the likes of Calvin Harris, Ed Sheeran and Ian Brown, he’s performed in New Zealand and Japan, and since 2006 he’s been Goldie’s producer.

However, for Heist there is no place in the world he would rather be than his home town of Colchester.

He loves the place so much, he has even taken it upon himself to bring some of the world’s best known drum ‘n’ bass DJs here for local clubbers to enjoy.

He says: “When I was starting out, there wasn’t really anything like this in Colchester.

“So I suppose it was kind of my way of giving young local DJs an opportunity to play with some big names.”

Heist started Sumo Beatz in July 2011 at the Circle Bar in Crouch Street, Colchester, and within a few months, he already had his first big name with good friend Goldie appearing.

Now based at Tribal, on St Botolph’s Circus, and nearly three years on, he’s still pulling them in, with this weekend’s club night featuring Hazard and Kenny Ken.

Heist says: “We’ve been there two years this summer and it’s been brilliant bringing these guys to play my home town.

“I think the best night we’ve ever had was last November with Sub Zero and Ray Keith, plus 420 clubbers upstairs and downstairs.

“It’s really putting Colchester on the map.”

But then Heist has always been keen to promote his home town.

Colchester born and bred, first going to Stanway Primary and then Honeywood School in Coggeshall, Heist cites another set of local boys done good as the reason he got into music in the first place.

He says: “It was the Prodigy all the way. I was about 13 at the time when their album Experience came out. I remember some older kids saying they knew them and that just was just incredible to me that someone local could have made it in the music industry.”

The possibility that Heist could achieve something similar must have stuck in his head because years later he locked himself away in his bedroom and taught himself how to make music.

He says: “I left school at 16 and did all kinds of jobs, like working in a warehouse, I was a hod carrier for a while and then finally a bricklayer.”

After gaining enough confidence in his music, he posted a demo to one of the country’s most prolific drum ‘n’ bass producers, Dillinja.

Heist says: “A month later I got a call from him saying he liked my work.”

Airplay on BBC Radio One Extra by the likes of Bailey and Fabio and Grooverider then got Heist noticed elsewhere.

He says: “Goldie’s manager had heard the track and then phoned me up to ask me to come in to see them.

“So I thought if I’m going to Metalheadz HQ (Goldie’s record label), I’d better take some music with me. I only had three tunes and he signed every single one.”

It was 2006 and Heist was just 23 at the time.

He says: “We just got on so well. Within an hour, he said I think we should go into the studio. I had been doing some engineering work for DJ Peshay, which obviously Goldie knew about, but I didn’t know whether I was ready to produce with this guy.

“But that’s why Goldie is the guy he is. He knew I was ready, even if I didn’t, and he had heard my production and that he could mould my sound to what he does.”

Heist’s most recent project has been working with some tenth century Scottish choral music, which at some stage will be re-created live with a 70-piece orchestra.

He says: “I don’t know when that will be exactly, but I can’t wait. But that’s a good example of how my musical tastes are now. I just like making music.

“At my Nan’s funeral we played one my tracks called Continental Drift, but with the beats taken out and the strings left in. I was really proud of that.”

As well as the international DJ gigs “I’m going back to New Zealand in November,” he grins, Heist has plenty of new music coming out too.

In fact four EPs in all, including his first six-track on his own Sumo Beatz label, entitled Pest Control.

He says: “I’m also starting work on my debut album, which hopefully will be out towards the end of the year.”

Sumo Beatz featuring Hazard, Kenny Ken and Heist takes place on Saturday at Tribal Nightclub in Colchester.
