Millions of children have invited the likes of Harry Potter, Dr. Seuss and Alice in Wonderland into their homes, their hearts and their imaginations. The worlds and characters we discover within the pages of a good book can stay with us for a lifetime and yet libraries are having to close their doors, permanently, at an alarming rate.

For a while now, local libraries have struggled financially. Decreases in funding due to a lack of interest from the local community has left most unable to afford computers, equipment and vitally, new books. Without these facilities or resources people are straying away from visiting.

Many young people turn to reading as an escape from the challenges of real life; whether it be their mental health they are struggling with or stress from school and exams, libraries offer a space of safety. School librarian, Regina Cashman commented, “it is devastating that local libraries are not receiving the funding that they need. Reading is at the heart of many young people’s lives and is a support for them if they feel they have no one to talk to. Everyone should have the right to read and that relies on having access to a range of books”.

Crucially, libraries also offer a tranquil space to revise, work or think, and they also provide important advice and support for those who need it. They are a place you can rely on, serving such a vital role in our society and in people’s lives.

All hope isn’t gone yet though. You can still save your local library. Help spread the word and make a point of visiting your local library this winter. Find out how you can sign up to receive your free library card here: Join the library (essex.gov.uk)
