THE latest arts-based piece to celebrate the life and work of Dr Joe Allard is being premiered at the Colchester Arts Centre this weekend.

Joe, who died in 2011, was a key figure in setting up Colchester Arts Centre and was at the heart of the organisation right up until his death.

A lecturer in English and American Literature at Essex University, the Wivenhoe-based academic was also a hugely talented creative person and a brilliant piano player.

In 2012, arts centre director, Anthony Roberts set up the Joe Allard Commission, the first of which was performed by his internationally renowned jazz guitarist son, Chris.

This year’s commission will be performed by Wivenhoe singer/songwriter Lou Terry, who is currently involved in a number of musical projects, including a new collection of recordings, which bring together folk, chanson, experimental rock, and lo-fi electronics such as circuit bending.

The 23 year-old started off as a solo artist before smashing the Colchester live music scene with his band, Ordinary Noise.

Getting their first airplay through legendary Colchester-based punk poet, John Cooper Clarke, the band started at the Colchester Sixth Form College, winning the college’s prestigious Battle of the Bands in 2013.

Two of the band members, Malachi Siner-Cheverst (cello) and Jonny Poole (drums), will be joining Lou for the gig, along with Seth Evans (keys/synth) and Sam Bouchouat (bass).

Currently studying music in London, Lou says: “I was delighted when I found out because it’s the first properly paid piece of music I’ve been asked to write. I’ve never written a long piece of music but it came at the right time because I’m working on a lot of new material with a load of new musicians.”

Taking place on Sunday from 1.30pm, the commission will consist of a live realisation of the recordings, as well as one extended song. Admission is free but to book a place call 01206 500900.
