COLCHESTER’S top sporting talent enjoyed the limelight at a glittering ceremony to reward the borough’s top achievers of 2019.
The Sport Colchester Sports Personality Awards were held at the JobServe Community Stadium on Monday 25th November.

Individuals, teams and volunteers representing a variety of sports received awards and commendations in front of a packed audience.
Boxer Lewis Richardson was named Male Sports Personality after a whirlwind 12 months that saw him land a full-time place in the Great Britain squad, being picked for an Olympic test event in Tokyo.
His other big highlight was being crowned British champion in the 75kg category at the British Boxing Championships, in Sheffield.


Athlete Rebecca Jeggo received the Female Sports Personality prize, following a year of success at both regional and national level.


Among many highlights, she achieved the qualifying time and was invited to the live-on-TV British Indoor and Outdoor Championships, in Birmingham.

Fellow athlete Henry Dover was the Under-14 Male Sports Personality while the female equivalent was badminton ace Chloe Dennis.
In the under-18s category, the respective winners were figure skater Edward Appleby and sailor Faye Chatterton.


Gazette: Sport Awards Mick Amey

Copford powerlifter Mick Amey was recognised for his vast success by winning a special Lifetime Achievement Award while the prestigious Premier Award was won by former Colchester Rugby Club youngster Lewis Ludlam.
The 23-year-old, who now plays for Northampton Saints, was selected for England’s 31-man Rugby World Cup squad.
He featured in four of England’s six games in Japan, including scoring his first international try in the match against the USA.
Other individual successes included Colchester Harriers Athletics Club’s Stephen Garnham being crowned Coach of the Year.


Para-swimming sensation Ellie Challis was a worthy winner of the Bill Tucker Under-18s Award while the senior equivalent went to powerlifter Dan McGauley.
Long-serving Stanway Villa Football Club stalwart Ann Longman had her years of dedication rewarded by being presented with the Eric Chapman Award.

Colchester County High School for Girls had cause for a double celebration.
Their rounders team were Under-14 Team of the Year while the Norman Way school also won the Development of PE and Sport for Young People by a School or College prize.

The University of Essex’s men’s volleyball team were Team of the Year while Running Colchester walked away with the Community Club of the Year award.

Colchester’s most prestigious annual sporting awards were first made over 30 years ago and are now recognised as one of the best of their kind in Essex.
They were sponsored by the Daily Gazette, meetings, accommodation, events and travel management experts Inntel and the Duley Practice, the local partner practice of St James Place Wealth Management. The judging panel consisted of representatives of Sport Colchester and the Gazette.
