Update: fatal explosion site handed back to owners

A SITE where an electric substation exploded has been handed back to its owners.

Last night firefighters left the substation in Bishop Hall Lane, Chelmsford, leaving it in the care of owners EDF Energy.

A man's life was claimed and 8,000 students were evacuated from Anglia Ruskin University, following the explosion and subsequent fire at the substation, shortly after midday on Wednesday.

Fire crews had to request a special type of foam to tackle the blaze, extinguishing it just before 6pm.

An investigation had been launched to discover the cause of the blaze, which remains unknown.

No further details on the dead man have been released yet.

Video footage of the fire is now available on the Weekly News website - click here to view.

I was in school at the time and we thought it was a normal fire but then our headteacher came in and told us to shut all the windows and not to panic because there has been an explosion at the power station.
