A British schoolgirl is in a serious condition in Italy after reportedly falling 30 feet from her hotel window.

The teenager, named in reports as Su Cangatin-Ripley, was part of a group staying at Hotel Cristallo at Venice's Lido during a choir trip when she fell.

She is understood to have been in a party of 42 from Emanuel School in Battersea, south-west London.

According to reports, a canopy over the bar below her hotel window ledge broke her fall before she hit the pavement.

She was taken to the Ospedale Dell'Angelo at Zelarono Mestre, where her condition was described as "grave".

A hospital spokesman said in remarks reported by Corriere della Sera: "The girl has a series of injuries to lungs and kidneys and brain.

"It seems they are not severe injuries, according to the scan. Her skull is not fractured."
