West End A are under way with two victories

In the men's premier division of the Goody's Colchester and District Tennis League, West End A finally got their season going with two victories in the space of six days.

First beating Kirby A 5-4 and then getting the same result against Phoenix A, despite the efforts of Paul Kirk and Colin Stallwood, who won all their three sets.

Colchester Garrison Officers Club B lost their first match of the season in Division Three, going down 6-3 to Colchester Lawn B, with Terry Mulvey and Tony Richards undefeated in the winning team.

In the Ladies first division, Kirby B inflicted a first defeat on Lexden Squash B and are now only half a point behind the league leaders.

The Essex B moved closer into third place following a comprehensive 8-1 victory over Colchester Lawn A.

The Essex A are unbeaten in the Mixed Premier Division, but only just.

They managed to win three matches in a row, 5-4, home and away against Kirby A and away at Frinton C.

Phil Edwards, partnering Rosemarie Pearson in one match and Ali Oddy in another, won two vital tie break sets to clinch the victories that keep the Essex A top of the division.

In Division One, Lexden Hill have won four out of four after beating Colchester Lawn A, 5-4.

The second round of the individual knockout tournament has now been completed.

Louise Killick had three hard fought matches, first defeating her daughter, Jemima, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the Open singles.

With her partner, Liz Empson, they came back from a 6-0 first set loss to beat Rodliffe and Wright, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 and then in the veteran singles she went down to Veronica Patten 7-5, 6-7, 6-3.

Also in this event, Fiona Edmond came back from a set down against Fiona Gosling to win 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.

In the Open singles, Julie Sexton beat former champion, Sarah Hughes, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a meeting with another former champion and number two seed, Karen Capon.
