Schools' success at aquathon

The first inter-school junior aquathon has been hailed a major success.

Eight primary schools competed in the event at Colchester Leisure World.

It was organised by the Colchester Blackwater School Sport Partnership and incorporated both swimming and running, for children aged between eight and 11.

Approximately 120 youngsters competed, including pupils from Colchester High, Chappel, Fingringhoe, Highwoods, Home Farm, St Lukes, North and St Marys.

The event was designed to bring a new style to the existing inter-school competitions and, in the future, produce interest in the national competition for seven to ten-year-olds.

The race began with a swim in the fitness pool at Colchester Leisure World, followed by a run through Castle Park and finishing at the cricket ground.

All the competitors received medals and also swimming vouchers provided by Leisure World, as well as the winners receiving top three-place medals.

Chris Taylor, school sports partnership development manager, said: "The event was designed to increase competition within primary schools and hopefully generate high interest in the sport, especially with the Olympics coming up.

"It was a brilliant day for all the competitors and parents alike - we could not have organised such a good event without all the volunteers who have helped."

Results: Year Four Boys: 1st Charlie Sexton (Chappel), 2nd Thomas Moore (Colchester High), 3rd Robert Harvey (Colchester High).

Year Four Girls: 1st Lana Mo (Colchester High), 2nd Elspeth Martin (St Marys), 3rd Rebecca Smith (St Marys).

Year Five Boys: 1st Sam Watkins (Home Farm), 2nd Cameron Simpsons (Home Farm), 3rd Harry Launder (Home Farm).
