Double success for Engaines

Little Clacton's Engaines School were double winners at the 2008 north-east Essex rounders final, at Alton Park School.

Having qualified for the finals by winning the smaller schools section of the Clacton rally, beating Frobisher, St Andrews, St Philomenas and Rolph, Engaines (pictured) were now up against the winners and best runners-up from the larger schools rally and winners from the three Colchester rallies.

The rally was played in almost perfect conditions with sunny intervals and a cooling breeze.

All participants played with a great deal of skill, enthusiasm and fairness, which was a credit to the staff who had coached them.

With the standard of play so high it was clear the tournament was going to be very closely run.

Engaines were able to continue their previous winning streak and by beating Alton Park in their first game became the overall champions of the Clacton Area.

Further wins - although just as close as the Alton Park game - against Holland Park, Prettygate, Hamilton and Langham placed Engaines as winners and champions of north-east Essex.

Engaines, together with runners-up Prettygate, now go forward to the national finals in Birmingham on July 11.
