IVAN Southernwood was in impressive form to win Playgolf Colchester's Spring Cup.

The 18-handicapper won the rearranged board-competition by two clear shots, following a superb round of nett 66.

Southernwood's round of seven pars and a par-four birdie saw him finish ahead of second-placed Stephen Marr (23), who also earned a shot cut.

Marr’s three pars and well-managed card helped him finish a shot ahead of third-placed Matthew Clark, who earned a shot cut to 15 following eight pars.

The hand-cut and ironed greens were in superb form, with good pace on offer and some tricky pin positions requiring accurate iron play or a sharp short-game.

Playgolf Colchester progressed to the second round of the Leslie Wood competition following a 8.5-6.5 victory over a strong visiting Colne Valley side.

The morning foursomes saw Colne come out firing and win the first three matches.

But the Playgolf tail wagged and kept the scores close, with Simon Longman and Richard Schultz along with Steve Loran and Jon Tait winning the final two matches.

The afternoon singles went the way of Playgolf early on, with Richard Swindells leading the team out and winning his match 2&1 to level the tie.

That was quickly followed by Conor Garvey winning 6&4, shaking hands on the 14th green.

Darren Kerr took a great half point as did Simon Longman, with Jack Blackman and Steve Johnson claiming further points.

Stephen Allen took a great point, winning 5&4 to settle the tie in Playgolf’s favour with anchor-man Jon Tait sealing the deal with a great half on the 18th.

Playgolf captain Martin Kilbey said: “Thanks to the Colne Valley team for such a great day of competition.

"Good luck to you in the plate competition and all the best for the rest of your season.”

Steve Turner won division one of the Playgolf Seniors stableford, with the only below-par score of 37 points.

John Eade was second with 33 points, with third-placed Stephen Peeling a point behind.

Des McCarron won division two with 33 points ahead of Stephen Ashbee, who was second on countback from Stephen Dale after both players finished on 32 points.

A large field took to the course for Playgolf's Ladies April Stableford.

Division one was very closely contested with Ruth Amoss winning on countback from Carol Farrance, after they both carded 27 points.

Jeanette Shea was just a point adrift, in third.

Shirley Birkin won division two with 26 points ahead of second-placed Maureen Dale (23 points) and Jan Blackmore (22 points).
