THERE was some outstanding scoring on show as Playgolf Colchester's annual Christmas Swindle attracted large numbers once again.

The frozen conditions made it tough going for some but not all, in a large field.

The two-division competition saw some outstanding scoring, considering the sub-zero temperatures present at the start.

Trevor Hollingsworth won division one with his solid back-nine score.

He won on countback from Darren Kerr, after both players carded a superb 38 points.

Graham Aide was a point behind, in third place.

Division two saw Steve Ainley win with 40 points from Stephen Marr (36 points).

In-form John MacDonald was third on countback from Alan Pearman and Ken Todd, with all three players carding 34 points.

Simon Wilson won the fun-prize “Best Use of the Course”.

First place in the Ladies went to Jeanette Shea, with Nicky Withycombe in second.

Ann Longman was third and the ladies nearest the pin prize, on the third hole, with an outstandingly close approach shot.

Jack Blackman took the men’s nearest the pin prize on the 16th and the battle of the sexes nearest the pin prize went to Ed Quilty.

He also took a third-share of the two’s prizes with Richard Frost and Trevor Cocksedge.

Organiser Colin Donnelly, worked his magic once again with the raffle and prizes on offer for the very popular annual event.

The Kitchen Club put on a superb two-course Christmas dinner to catering for the restaurant filled with cold golfers after the fun and frolics of the mornings golf.

Playgolf seniors were suitably clad in festive attire for their fun Christmas fayre stableford competition.

With nearest the pins, longest drive and straightest drive prizes, a good field took part.

Players had to contend with six optional double point black flags, in what were considered very unattractive positions.

They required accurate putting or the potential of finding your ball further away from the hole than your initial putt, giving the players a lot to think about.

Colin Green won the event on countback from second-placed Steve Loran, after both carded an amazing 50 points.

Des Mccarran was third, on 47 points.

Nearest the pin on the third hole was David Field and on the 14th was Steve Loran.

The longest drive on the 15th went to Jerry Dalton and Ken Ellsmore had the straightest drive on the ninth hole.

Playgolf's ladies staged their annual Mulled Wine and Mince Pies Madness Day, with the club's Seniors section joining them.

A large field turned out with the format for the day set to Texas Scramble, with teams consisting of one lady and two gentlemen.

Mulled wine and mince pies were enthusiastically received by all and the halfway house.

Brian Ruffell, Jeanette Shea and Jerry Dalton won the event with their nett 62.5.

Runners-up were Maureen Dale, Alan Kitching and Steve Marr (65.6) by a mere .3 of a shot from Sue Patrick, Derek Manister and Trevor Cocksedge (65.9).

Other prizes were awarded to Gina Macmillan and Derek Manister for ladies and gents nearest the pins.

Liz Schultz took the ladies’ straightest drive prize, with Alan Barrett winning the gents’ longest-drive.

A total of £330 was raised for the Ladies’ Captain’s Charity, Sense for Deaf Blind Children.
