RICHARD Cross and Mandy Byham enjoyed a narrow win in Stoke by Nayland Golf Club's Hunter Guide Dog mixed greensomes competition.

They won with 40 points, finishing a point ahead of runners-up Michael Isom and Roz Clements.

Richard Allen and Fiz Grundy were third, with 38 points.

Colin Pottle and Jill Pottle secured the best front nine, while Del Pritchard and Jo Little enjoyed the best back nine.

The Hunter Guide Dog Trophy has been contested since 1997, when David Hunter was Stoke by Nayland GC captain and his charity was Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Two decades on, the club's members continue to support the worthy charity and more than £100 was raised at this year's event.

A very good entry included Hunter, who played with the Ladies vice-captain Elaine Davidson and presented the trophy with club captain, Don Wiggins.

Division two: 1st Adrian Beckingsale 96-24 = 72; 2nd Richard Middleton 92-19 = 73; 3rd Tony Reeves 96-22 = 74.

Medal Bell: Graham Vandervord - lowest gross 81.

Stoke by Nayland's Ladies section's weekly stableford and annual V's Lady Vets Greensomes were both well supported.

Results, stableford winners: 1 Bev Thompson 36pts; 2 Margaret Bentley 35pts ocb; 3 Sue Latham 35 pts.

Stoke by Nayland Ladies played their annual Greensomes match against the Lady Vets.

The match finished in a half, with Lillian Osborne presenting the trophy to Ladies captain Anne Hemmings and Vets captain Diana Harris.

Lucy Cater was overall winner of the weekend ladies stableford competition with an impressive 38 points, on the Gainsborough course.

She finished six points ahead of runner-up Mandy Byham.
