After beating Bolton GC in the semi-final, their three games to one victory in the final was due testament their skill and perseverance.

Having lost in the first round of the competition, they progressed in the plate competition.

They played in five regional and area rounds to qualify for the finals, at Staverton Park Golf Club.

In the final, Lorrie Austin won his match one hole up with Tom Rothery adding another victory, 2&1.

After winning his semi-final match, Bill Eke went down the last but lost two down in the final.

However, John Dornan added the final point with a resounding 7&6 victory.

It was AGM week at Colchester GC.

Colchester’s captain for 2017-2018 is Mike Withers who along with Jim Wilkinson as his vice-captain, was voted in by the membership.

The Ladies voted Renate Clark as their section's captain, who along with Clive Kerr (vets section) and Cai James (junior section) make up the year’s captains.

The New Captains’ team enjoyed a thumping 3.5/2.5 victory against the Past Captains’ entourage, in the traditional match between the two parties.

Playing in Greensomes Matchplay, 2016-17 captains Stewart Ness and Jane Madge halved their match with newly-crowned captains, Withers and Clark.

Withers was gracious at the end of his match, knowing that the next three games went his team's way to safely secure victory.

He said: “A just result setting the match off in a modest and proper way.

"It was a battle of perseverance by all, especially as they were battling Storm Brian as well as the opposition."
