MIKE Sutton won the Essex Golf Union’s Veterans' Trophy, at Burnham-on-Crouch.

Sutton was one of two players representing Colchester Golf Club and he scored 39 points, which was enough to give him a clear two-shot victory over a field representing Essex clubs.

From his eight handicap, Sutton’s first nine was just two over par.

Then effectively paring to the 16th, he had a bogey and a double but steadied and pared the 18th to secure his win.

Sutton’s score was two ahead of Paul Neale (11), of Colne Valley.

The club had more joy in county competitions when the Youth Shield Scratch team progressed to the final on Sunday, September 17.

They beat The Warren and will now play Chelmsford.

Taking the tie by four matches to one, the team had wins from Josh Coleman (4&3), Harry Hills (2&1), Max Maynard (5&4) and Joe Jackson (6&5), with Dan Nicholls surprisingly going down 4&2.

In the ladies' stableford, Caroline Slagle (33) returned 39 points to take first spot from Hayley Joel (26), who had 38 points.

Catherine Chick (20) was on 36 points, one clear of three ladies - Carla Holroyd (36), Fiona Rose (27) and Sara Cock (30).

It was Family Logan time on Sunday when the club hosted a three-ball Texas Scramble.

The competition was won by a team comprising John, Patrick and Tim Logan, who carded an impressive 59.9 from their combined 4.1 handicap.

With six birdies and the rest pars, the score was always going to be difficult to beat.

Hard on there heels, however, and playing from 4.5 were Barry Haley, Vic Pomphrett and Paul Smith, with 60.6 nett.

Just a bogey on the 15th kept them out of top place.

In third place, back on 62.3, were Stuart Bark, Mark Culley and Jim Maltby, playing off a combined 5.7.

Dick Bokenham, Barrie Minns and Steve Sharman (5.6) took fourth spot with a score of 62.4.

Julie Ruscoe and Alan Macnaught, with a gross 72, equating to 43 points, ran away with the prize in the Bank Holiday Mixed Greensomes.

Daphne and John Bloomfield were runners-up with 42 points and Janet and Lorrie Austin third on 39.

Four pairs returned 37 points, with Allison Claire and Jim Maltby given fourth place and Philippa Deman and Mike Withers fifth.

Claire and Clive Hebden, along with Joy and Allen Bevan, both lost out after the countback.
