MILES Hooton secured an impressive victory in Colchester Golf Club’s VJ Cup.

The key to Hooton’s victory was undoubtedly his back nine where he bagged four birdies, amassing 24 points from his eight handicap.

On a day where big scores were the norm, two competitors finished just a point behind Hooton's 41 points, Joe Jackson (15) and Clive Mason (12).

The minor positions were decided after a countback, with three players all recording 39s.

David Drake (17) was called fourth with five handicapper Richard Withnall getting fifth, and Mickey Potter (10) also on 39 points taking sixth.

Colchester GC junior captain, Louisa Storey, held her Captain’s Day.

Thomas Mclaren (36 handicap) returned 40 points to win, ahead of second-placed Arian Masud (11).

Along with Masud, Josh Coleman (3) also carded 39 points.

Sam Jackson (10) was fourth, ahead of fifth-placed Charley Hatley (9) on 37.

Nearest the pins were Joe Jackson and Josh Coleman on the fourth and eighth holes respectively and Jack Moutell and Louisa Storey on the 13th and 16th. James Wright took the straightest drive prize.

Colchester GC's Juniors Scratch team grabbed the headlines in the county Youth Shield competition and are now into the semi-finals.

They beat Stock Brook Manor 4-1 at Warley Park with Dan Nicholls, Harry Hills, Max Maynard and Louisa Storey winning.

Josh Coleman took his opponent down the 18th to lose on the last.

Colchester GC ladies played for the Ladies Stableford Trophy, for players with 24 handicap and above.

Hayley Joel (27) cracked home 38 points to take first spot above Penny Fairs (25) and Maureen Crosbie (28), who both returned 37 points.

Fourth and fifth places were taken by Janet Wilson (36) and Jan Murray (26).

In the support stableford, Hannah Butcher (23) had 38 points to lead the players in, with Lynda Hilliard (18) and Jane Reed (12) both carding 37.

Linda Freeman (18) and Jo Mager returned 35 points, to take the minor placings.

Colchester GC's ladies Monroe Foursomes team came unstuck against Clacton in the semi-finals of the county competition.

Reaching the last four was not easy with 40 clubs initially entering.

Katy Yates and Faye Trigg beat Louisa Storey and Charley Hatley 2&1, at Frinton Golf Club.
