NICK Clare and Catherine Chick claimed the Cant Cups at Colchester Golf Club.

Clare, playing off a handicap of 17 and in-form Chick (21) were worthy winners in the mixed foursomes medal competition, which was first presented to the club in 1920.

Their score of 70 was 1½ points clear of runners-up Lorrie (seven) and Janet Austin (24).

Bill Eke (five) and Annie Johnston (12) were third on countback ahead of Mike Withers (ten) and Philippa Deman (nine).

Colchester GC's ladies played for the MacMillan Spoon, with Joan Cotterill (25) claiming the prize in the medal competition.

Cotterill’s steady golf and a good return on the par threes allowed her nett 70 to sneak one shot ahead of second-placed Maureen Devenish (16).

Devenish had six pars on her way home but it was not enough to overtake Cotterill.

However, it helped place her one shot above Judith Robertson (14) who was hard on her heels in third spot with a course par-equalling 72.

Janet Wilson (36) and Cathy Burchell (ten) both returned nett 73s, to share fourth place.

Allison Cordran undoubtedly earned the shot of the day prize, after holing out on the eighth.

Colchester GC held a Sunday Stableford with a twist, with each player randomly being given the stableford-converted score of a player participating in the final round of the Open, at Royal Birkdale.

The competition at Colchester was badly disrupted by violent showers but produced some interesting results.

Philip Davies (19), paired with Russell Henley (40+39 pts) won after a count back from the pairing of Ian Parry (8) and Zach Johnson (39+40).

Geoff Lawrenson (14) paired with Alex Noren, was third with 77 points from Iain Cruickshank (8) and Arron Baddley.

Roger Wright (four) was badly let down by Charl Schwartzel who could only add 35 points to Wright’s competition-equalling top score of 40 points.

If only Schwartzel had known, he may have tried harder!

John Powell (26) returned an impressive 38 points in Colchester GC's midweek stableford.

He was closely followed in by John Davis (16) who returned 37 points and third-placed George Shelmerdine (14) on 34.

Maureen Devenish and Hayley Joel had a 5&3 win over Liz Lennox and Maureen Crosbie, in the ladies' Mackenzie Foursomes Cup Final.

The knockout competition is another long-established event, first played for in 1949.
