IVAN Southernwood took the top honours as Playgolf Colchester held their popular annual Members Cup.

Southernwood (21) won the stableford-format competition on countback, after recording 39 points.

He was aided by a great back nine score helped by a birdie on the par three 16th at the event, which was open to all sections of the club and attracted a very good turnout.

The superb weather and course conditions helped the scoring but the greens and thick rough stopped anyone getting away with wayward shots.

Mick Seaman (ten) finished as runner-up, only missing out after failing to score on the difficult par-four 11th hole.

He found thick rough from the tee and then compounded the issue with his next shot from a tricky position in thick rough.

He put his second shot over the hedge up the left in even thicker rough, so declared his ball lost.

Seaman returned to single figures to play off nine, next time out.

Matthew Clark was a point back on 38 points to finish third, following a par of pars and two par-three birdies.

Playgolf members and friends turned out in large numbers for the second annual Pete Brown memorial day.

The event is dedicated to the memory of long-time member Pete and raised money for the Essex Air Ambulance.

Playgolf member, Adrian Binns, headed up the organisation and did a first-rate job, organising the crowds for the shotgun start and raffle.

A grand total of £1,600 was raised for Essex Air Ambulance and Mr Brown’s family were on hand to give out prizes and a thank you speech.

Results: 1st Howard Banham 37pts; 2nd Jason Broadly 35pts ocb; 3rd Darren Kerr 35 pts ocb.

Richard Swindells won the nearest the pin prize on the par-three third-hole.

Ex-captain Jeff Coles won the Playgolf Seniors Mid Summer Cup on countback from Jeremy Dalton, after both players carded nett 69.

Geoff Backhouse carded the lowest gross of 82 (nett 70) to take third.

Alan Barrett, Geoff Backhouse, Trevor Cocksedge, Des McCarron, Ken Ellsmore and Jim Greenfield all had par-three birdies to win a sleeve of balls.

Playgolf's ladies' captain Gina Macmillan staged a Charity Invitation Day raising funds for the Shelley Centre for Riding for the Disabled.

The stableford event, which raised the fantastic sum of £600, saw fourball teams consisting of a mix of players from 16 clubs around Essex and Suffolk compete, each with at least one Playgolf Lady as the team host.

The best two scores from each hole counted, plus the whole team scores on the par three holes.
