STOKE by Nayland's Matt Thompson will receive a significant handicap cut after achieving the best overall nett score at the club's annual Junior Open.

Thompson was in impressive form at the 36-hole competition, with Alice Barlow from Newton Green, the best nett girl.

The event attracted junior golfers from East Anglia, although this year the numbers were down on previous years.

It was played in good weather with some excellent scores with prizes presented and sponsored by General UK Manager at COBRA PUMA, Mark Freeman.

Stockbrook Manor's Holly Haslem [5] carded a gross 73 and 82 to lift the Girls Championship Trophy.

Callum Brookes [4] with a gross 70 and 76 and a hole-in-one at the Gainsborough third, lifted the Boys Championship Trophy.

Bawburgh GC's Amy Taylor [3] was girls' runner-up, with Chris Chaplin [5] boys' runner-up.

Organiser Adrian Bullock complimented players on their behaviour and sporting abilities, with yet again another successful junior open.

Stoke by Nayland have progressed to the second round of the Essex Seniors Team Championship after winning 7/4 at Upminster.

Home advantage is a big thing in this competition and when the Stoke players saw the tea sheet with all but one single figure handicapped players on it, they knew that they were in for a tough match.

Stoke all played the par-three first hole fairly well and from there had six players up at the halfway mark, with two all square.

Knowing that the match is not won on the front nine they kept the pressure on and eventually sealed victory.

Stoke by Nayland will now host either Langdon Hills or Belfairs in the second round, on or before May 13.
