A FIELD of 26 pairs took part in the Richardson Cups at Maldon Golf Club.

Random pairs are drawn for this long-standing, foursomes competition inaugurated in 1937 and it is played in the stableford format with pairs receiving 50 per cent combined handicap allowance.

The Maldon course is currently in superb condition, with fairways and greens the best they have been for several years.

The rough is, however, very tough and the final scores reflected this.

Winning on 34 points was the pairing of Jim Scott and Paul Holland.

In second place, on 33 points, were Alan Buckingham and Alan Dunsdon, on countback from Pete Leforgeais and Rob Poynton.

Fourth went to Gordon Harvey and Chris Purkiss on 32 points, while Ian Finch and Steve Lawrence secured fifth on 31 points.

There were several nearest-the-pin pairs prizes this week – all for the closest second shot to the nominated par four holes.

They were sixth/15th – Stuart Reece-Ford and Peter Bibby, seventh/16th – Rob Poynton and Pete Leforgeais, ninth/18th – John Meakes and Malcolm Burnett.
