Morrison strike earns U's a point

Clinton Morrison scored his first Colchester United goal to help his side earn a 1-1 draw with promotion favourites Sheffield United this afternoon.

Morrison's goal earned the U's a third successive draw, in front of a crowd of 4,017 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Sheffield United dominated the first half and U's defender Matt Heath was forced to clear from underneath his own crossbar early on, after Stephen Quinn's shot had only partially been cleared by keeper Mark Cousins.

But the U's fell behind in the 17th-minute when Manchester United loanee John Cofie looped a long-range effort over Cousins and in, after finding room outside the area.

The Blades threatened to add to their lead between then and half-time.

David McAllister went close with a header and Cofie should have done better when he blasted over the bar from close range, after Kevin McDonald had rounded Cousins and picked him out.

Tony McMahon went close with a free-kick early in the second half and Cousins was forced to save with his legs at his near post, following Nick Blackman's close-range effort, as the U's struggled to create meaningful goalscoring chances.

McMahon's effort from the edge of the area flashed just wide for Sheffield United but the U's were back on level terms with 18 minutes to go through Morrison, who converted from close range after Magnus Okuonghae had helped on Anthony Wordsworth's corner in the area.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday Morrison made the most of his celebrations, running half the length of the field to cup his ears to the visiting Blades fans who had been giving him stick throughout the match.

Substitute Andrew Bond struck the inside of the far post with five minutes to go, as the U's claimed their third successive draw.

Shame we didn't seem the same passion and enthusiasm as the last two league games (except bean, who again was superb). Nice to see us end looking lively though with a good end to the game. Two tricky games away be looking for at least 3points from.

About right no passion at all , with exception of Bean who seemed the only one interested. I dont go very often and on the showing today Henderson and Wordsworth were both very poor .
Not in a rush to go back

Can't argue with that, Henderson (apart from last 10minuted) was very lazy and poor. Stopped counting the amount of times he just stood by and watched the ball, Massey hopefully gets the nod for tranmere

The crowd was over 2,000 less than the corresponding fixture last year. How low can Ward and his dreadful football take us?

After having to watch, what a few people did call a great game on Tuesday evening against Pompey I decided yesterday against watching the same old dross again, hence no comment on yesterdays game. From the reports it seems it was much the same boring football again.
Instead as I only live a nominal milegage from Swindon went to watch them for the first time this season against MK Dons. I blogged a few weeks ago on this site how DiCanio had his players in extra early for pre season training . I was ridiculed by a certain person over this. The pace Swindon play is blistering and they do not stop with relentess attack after attack down the wings. The fitness levels of these players shows with the way they all push forward andl back defending when required. They dont let you settle on the ball for a second and close down quickly. As Di Canio said PC WORLD are a big name but it does not mean to say they are good. You dont have to have big name players. Even after yesterdays game Di Canio was not happy. Personally to just wanting to survive in this division just shows to me that Cowling and Ward should be in a nursing home instead of running a football club. I also notice for reserve games this season the addmission price is £10 . Hope no body bothers because I certainly wont. Now lets be having Wards army replies back to this.

I listened with interest to the now predictable John Ward post-match interview on BBC Essex "I'm happy with a draw - I told you they were a big club/good side etc etc". Enough is enough - I can't listen any longer without saying something. I'm sorry John but yet again I think you were watching a different game to me on Saturday and to be honest I think I've been watching a different club since you were installed as our manager. I bought my season ticket this year in the vain hope that my beloved U's would once again start to play with passion and pride - both sorely missed for more than a season. After two home games the signs are not good and in a very short summary it looks like "same rubbish, different season" to me! I've just a few simple questions...
Why do the U's start with one striker at home only to change tactics after 70 minutes when (as usual) things are not working out? Why start with the same players who consistently underperform week after week - if Henderson is not interested just drop him for someone who can be bothered? Why have we a manager who shows so little passion on the touch-line?
As a fan of more than 30 years standing I don't mind my team losing if they've have tried everything to win. Unfortunately I can't see the passion and to be honest I don't want to sit through another 20 odd games/draws of dross. I'm urging you John to show you've got some fight and instead of just 'clapping' all game start showing some passion!!! If you want to have a go at me by all means do - I sit just behind you - anything to just get a response!! To Mr Cowling - I understand you want a manager to show you some loyality but do you really want a manager who can't inspire people to come and watch the team you put so much into. There comes a time when you just have to admit you got it wrong before it's too late and all is lost. Something needs to happen.....I'm so disillusioned!
